Preservation association doles out awards
The Greater Houston Preservation Association awarded 11 Good Brick Awards this week to individuals and companies that have made an impact on historic preservation in Houston. The Feb. 27 event was held at one of the award-winning projects, The Corinthian, located downtown at 201 Main St. Frank Garvey and Jackson Hicks took home decorated bricks with engraved plaques for their work in redeveloping the former First National Bank Building as a special events venue and for-sale loft project. Spire Realty Group received recognition for its commitment to historic preservation with three renovation projects completed within the past year, including the newly opened Sam Houston Hotel. Colby Design and Kaldis Development Interests — which adapted the 1926 Imperial Plumbing Building at 1600 Westheimer into Hugo's Restaurant — were also recognized. And a troop of Girl Scouts was honored for its historical research of Houston's Glenwood Cemetery.
Other awards were presented to Ray + Hollington Architects, Gingrich Associates Architects, Steven Courtade, Sherry Hill, The Alidade Group, William Caudell, Randy Powers, Rice University, FKP Architects, Courtney and Fred Steves and Glassman Shoemake Maldonado Architects. John Nau III, president of Houston-based Silver Eagle Distributors and chairman of the Texas Historical Commission and National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, received the GHPA President's Award.
